    • SHERIFF SPRADLEY BADLEY WOUNDED/DAILY SENTINEL NEWSPAPER: DURING HIS LONG CAREER SHERIFF SPRADLEY WAS SHOT TWICE. THE FIRST TIME CAME NEAR BEING FATAL, AND THE INCIDENT IS TOLD BY HIM AS FOLLOWS: IT WAS AS HIS 2ND TERM AS SHERIFF AND IT WAS 1884, IN MIDSUMMER. IT HAPPENED ON A SATURDAY. AFTER TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IN LINN FLAT HE RODE INTO NACOGDOCHES WHERE THE TOWN WAS FULL OF COUNTRY PEOPLE AS USUAL AND CONSIDERABLE DRINKING WAS GOING ON. AFTER PUTTING HIS HORSE UP AT THE LIVERY STABLE, HE WENT TO THE MITCHELL HOTEL AND WAS EATING WHEN SOMEONE ENTERED TELLING HIM THAT MEN UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF WHISKEY WERE CAUSING TROUBLE AT THE STORE ON MAIN STREET.HE WENT TO P.C. RICHARDSON'S STORE WHERE MR. RICHARDSON WAS HOLDING A SHOTGUN AND THREATENING TO USE IT . THERE WERE 2 OR 3 MEN,UNDER THE INFLUENCE OFLIQUOR , WHO'D STARTED A ROW WITH HIM. HE ARRESTED BILL ROGERS AND WAS TAKING HIM TO JAIL, WHEN HE MET HIS BROTHER, WHIG ROGERS,WHOM HE KNEW AS A PERSONAL FRIEND, WHO WAS ALSO UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF LIQUOR. WHIG STOPPED THEM AND WANTED TO KNOW THE TROUBLE.SPRADLEY REPLIED THAT BILL WAS DRUNK AND HE WAS TAKING HIM TO JAIL UNLESS HE STOPPED HIS ROWDYISM AT ONCE.I WHIG SAID,"YOUR NOT PUTTING BILL IN JAIL, NOT TODAY NOHOW", AND HE REACHED FOR HIS GUN. SPRADLEY LET BILL LOSE, DREW HIS PISTOL AND PUT IT ON WHIG AND SAID,"DON'T DO IT WHIG OR I WILL KILL YOU. WHIG JERKED HIS PISTOL, FIRED TWO SHOTS, ONE OF WHICH STRUCKSPRADLEY IN THE CENTER OF THE BREAST AND WENT ENTIRELY THREW HIS BODY.(THE SHOT WAS LOW AND TOO CENTRAL TO BE INSTANTLY FATAL). SPRADLEY WAS CARRIED TO THE MITCHELL HOTEL AND LAID OUT. THE SHOOTING HAD CREATED CONSIDERABLE EXCITMENT BUT HAD ALSO CREATED QUIET ON THE STREETS. DOC MAYFIELD EXAMINED HIM AND TOLD HIM HE ONLY HAD 30MINUTES TO LIVE AND SAID IF HE HAD ANYTHING TO SAY IT NEEDED TO BE SAID NOW. SPRADLEY SAID"I WAS KILLED BY A DRUNKEN MAN, WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FRIEND. I HOLD NO MALICE TOWARDS HIM, AND I'M SURE HE HAD NONE AGAINST ME. DR. PORTER FEARS CAME IN AND TOLD HIM ,"HELL, NO, YOUR'RE NOT GOING TO DIE. YOU AND I WILL BOTH BE HERE WHEN THIS BUNCH IS DEAD. DOC FEARS HAD HIM MOVED TO A COOL ROOM WHERE HE LAID UNCONSCIOUS FOR NINE DAYS. WHEN HE AWOKE HE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO HIM AND WAS TOLD THAT HE'D BEEN AT DEATH'S DOOR. IT WAS A CLOSE CALL. [2]
